About the University:
Nazarbayev University (NU) is a flagship institution in Kazakhstan and the whole of Central Asia, with a strong research focus. The university was founded in 2010 and named after Nursultan Nazarbayev, the first president of Kazakhstan, who was in power between 1991 and 2019. It prides itself of being the first university founded on the principles of university autonomy and academic freedom in the country. It had around six thousand students in 2025, three percent of which international. It ranked among the best 600 institutions worldwide according to Times Higher Education in 2025, by far the highest rank in Kazhakhstan, with a substantial lead in research over its followers.
